It's also a great spot to see the Matterhorn, except when the sky is cloudy. And still the atmosphere around this place is just amazing to hike and enjoy the moment.
Recommend this place then you can hike up and down to the next station if you're fit enough!!
The view of the Matterhorn mountain and its reflection in this lake is absolutely amazing, and it's my top favorite thing to see in Zermatt. The first time I visited early in the morning, I felt really sad because thick clouds covered the mountain, and I couldn't see a thing. However, when those clouds finally disappeared, the view became truly spectacular. The sight of the Matterhorn and its perfect reflection in the lake's calm waters is something I'll always cherish. It's like a dream come true for nature lovers like me, and it's a must-see when you're in Zermatt.
We took the first train from Zermatt, Gornergrat bahn at 07:00 to see the sunrise on the Matterhorn and the reflection in the Riffelsee. Absolutely stunning. To go to the Riffelsee, you get out of the train at Rotenboden station.
After a walk around the area we took the train one stop further to Gornergrat station to have a 360 view on the mountains including the highest peak in Switzerland, the Dufourspitze, which is part of the Monta Rosa. Train tickets can be booked via the SBB app or ordered at the desk of the Gornergrat bahn. As stunning as the views are……unfortunatelly the effects of global warming are visible too. Please leave a thumbs up/like if you think this review was useful.
My tips:
- Check the weather on meteoswiss app (they're really accurate)
- Get on the 1st or 2nd train up to avoid the crowds
- Enjoy the views!
- Didn't have any issues buying the ticket on the spot (used SBB EasyRide)
Went on the first train up to see the golden kissed Matterhorn, sadly the train had issues and we missed it.
We were told to get off and take the next train (which was 30 minutes later).
Didn't really get upset, these things can happen, I was just unlucky (so just keep this in mind)
Beautiful view of the Matterhorn with its reflection on Riffelsee Lake.
It’s a small lake but worth stopping at Rotenboden station and walking down towards the lake for some good views and photos. Rotenboden is just one stop away from Gornergrat.
Was totally worth it getting up early to shoot the sunrise. In mid October the 7am train is early enough, the perfect timing was around 07:52
Pretty lake which sometimes reflects Zermatt. We took the Sunday sunrise tour up and it was beautiful to watch the colourful changing sky.
Great view of Matterhorn if the weather permits. It's a very expensive train ride if the clouds don't part for the sunrise reveal.
